fem·i·nism
[fem-uh-niz-uhm]A couple of things that may not make sense to some people after reading this definition are:
- Being a feminist does not mean that one thinks women should be better than the opposite sex socially, politically, or economically (or in any other way these do not encompass).
- Being a feminist does not mean that one has some sort of sneaky "feminist agenda".
- Being a feminist does not make one a lesbian.
- Being a feminist does not make one pro-choice.
- Being a feminist does not make one want sexual revolution 2.0. Neither is feminism synonomous with promiscuity.
Yes, I suppose there are feminist agendas, lesbian feminists, and pro-choice feminists as well. I don't bring these into the mix to stir up other controversial subjects; rather, to make a point.
The point is that these are some of the construed connotations that the term "feminist" has picked up over the years. I see this word falling swiftly into the realm were words such as "retard" fall. It's denotated meaning is no longer meaning as much as it's connotated one.
But claiming that you are a feminist is not tantamount to actually being all of the bullet points above, my friends!
I imagine that feminism, like many other words, simply appeared after an idea was formulated that (gasp!) women should be equal to men.
Feminists do not want women earning $1.20 to a man's dollar. Nor do they want women to earn what they are currently earning to a man's dollar. They want the ratio to simply be 1:1. Equal.
(This rant is brought to you by conversations I've had recently
with friends as well as ignorance I have heard
and seen that has made me rather frustrated. Like many other
times, I have taken out these frustrations on keyboard and computer.
My more preferred method of a swift punch to the face is frowned upon
by those who consider themselves "civilized". Ba!)
