1. I was a pretty good reader by fourth grade. I don't say that to brag because if I wanted to brag I would say something more brag worthy than "Look at me. Look at me. I was such a great reader in the fourth grade". Anyways, the Anne of Green Gables series struck my fancy. I had never read any of the books, but they sounded interesting to me. I remember telling my teacher that I was gonna read them. She told me not to. Too advanced for you, she said. There are so many words you won't know, she said. I read them anyways. I loved them and I learned big words and I stuck it to my fourth grade teacher. This is me, eight years later, saying thanks to my ten year old self for not lowering my expectations because somebody told me to.
2. I'm not too shabby at drawing, either. In the sixth grade I drew a singer that was on a cd cover. I was pretty proud of my artwork so I decided to show it to my teacher. I eagerly thrust it into her hands on April 1st. She looked at it, looked at me, and then smiled and said, "This is an April Fool's joke, huh? You couldn't draw this" and then handed it back. I tried convincing her that, dude, if I wanted to pull a prank on you it would be way more exciting than pretending to draw something. She didn't believe me.
Moral of the story: Don't ever diminish your potential by lowering the expectations you have for yourself to one's that other's have for you because they obviously don't know how awesome you are.
