Well, in the past week I have slept in my own bed a grand total of one times. The rest of the time I was sleeping in a nice bed at Summer Conference (a.k.a. church camp) or a probably germ infested bed in a sketchy town in Idaho.
An entire blog post about my experience at summer conference will be coming to a computer near you sometime this week.
Being in a dissatisfying bed had to do with going on a road trip to drop my brother off at college. After trying five fine establishments (to be told they were booked and to "try the inn down the way") we were reduced to a rough, not just around the edges, place in a town in the middle of nowhere. I said my prayers that night and asked God to keep us safe. Thankfully, He did.
As we left in tact the next morning I was, for some reason, reminded of the Christmas story and how "there was no room for Him in the inn". I thought about how frustrating it had been for us to be turned aside time after time (and none of us were with child). This moment served as a reminder of how Jesus humbled Himself, not only in death, but in birth. I love how God can take a tiny moment and use it towards our edification.
The trip was not the most exciting, but was still worthwhile. We made a habit at veering off the interstate to admire any college campus that popped up. We joked that run down shacks were our "retirement homes". We read novels and the news, played go fish and quizzed each other on capitals, made up songs and spoke in funny voices.
So, yes, it was worthwhile, but, no, I would not like to be in a vehicle for more than 20 minutes for the next couple of days.
Some of the beauty of the PNW
