Become great

It's hard when you're trying to be a better person,
and then you mess up.
But it's okay.
Remember that.
We don't become great
without setbacks
or mistakes.
The important thing to remember
is that you're trying.

Technically free

Will we forsake unruly wilderness,
for carefully landscaped lawns?
Or bury our beautiful bodies,
under workouts, drugs, and synthetic parts?
How long will our rivers be dammed?
How long our people, too?
By the limitation of societies guiding hand.
You know we live by rules
that aren't written down.
The most stringent masked
by the technicality of freedom.
And we play our part so carefully
or endure the sentence of society--
disdain.
And so we jail the outcast
that doesn't play our game.

The fish walked the shores

The fish walked the shores,
and humans swam the seas.
Like inequality and oppression,
it made no sense to me.

The waters climbed slowly inward,
and the moon relinquished its hold.
Like growing out of ignorance,
the world was not what I'd been told.

The waters rose like trees,
and sea foam splayed like leaves,
and suddenly all I knew,
made no sense to me.

Seasons

When the air softens,
I'll taste its perfume.
As the heat rises,
I'll smell sun's burn on my skin.
When the tree's flutter,
I'll crinkle their decay beneath my feet.
As the sky thickens,
I'll sink into the earth, a couple inches deep.
Then I'll watch it begin again.

When days go right,
I'll smile.
As days dance with goodness,
I'll laugh.
When days are solemn,
I'll frown.
As days break, not just for dawn,
I'll cry.
Then I'll watch it begin again.

Dreams

If you asked me,
"Do you want your dreams
to come true?"
I'd say yes.
And if you asked,
"What are your dreams?"
I would say,
"I don't know."
Which is problematic,
because if I don't know my dreams,
I won't know if
they're coming true.
